Oudewater and the Witches' Weighhouse

For around a hundred years, visitors from all over the world have come to the Weighhouse in Oudewater. They step onto the scales and receive a certificate. The weighing tradition dates back to the 16th century, when it was a matter of life and death: people accused of witchcraft could end up at the stake. Emperor Charles V granted Oudewater the unique privilege of issuing a fair weighing in Europe. As a result, no one was ever convicted of witchcraft here.
